Swedish Repairer Takes Home Three Silver Cup Awards

Peter Holmer (center) traveled from Sweden to attend SSIA's 102nd Convention in Orlando.

Peter Holmer came a long way to get to SSIA's convention in Orlando. Co-owner of Backman's Shoe Service in  Stockholm, Sweden, Peter joined SSIA earlier this year, has been an active participant on the association's forum and decided to make the trek to Orlando to see what he could learn.

When asked about shoe repair in

Europe, Peter says he faces the same challenges as his peers in North America. The number of shops is decreasing and consumers are not using shoe repair as frequently.

Peter is a member of his local association as well. Like SSIA, it is about 100-years-old and serves as a source of marketing ideas and networking.

When asked which marketing ideas worked best, Peter cited flyers he prepared for shoe stores. He framed the flyers for display in the stores and offered 10 percent off of protective soles with the purchase of new shoes.

Before coming to Orlando, Peter took the time to enter SSIA's Silver Cup Contest. The judges found his work to be superior and awarded him first place in the men's full sole, men's half sole and ladies half sole categories.

Peter said he made the trip to the United States (his first) as part of his quest to continue to improve his business. He bought a new press in Orlando and said he picked up some bonding techniques as well. He hopes to return for SSIA's 103rd Annual Convention in Chicago.
