With an ever
continuing need for quality improvement in
patient care, the need for competency-based
programs to provide clinical knowledge to new
and existing pedorthic-related service providers
is of prime importance. Pedorthic Shoe
Technician designation, and related program
standards, serves to ensure competency of those
individuals who provide shoe modification
services as support staff to
credentialed/licensed Pedorthists, orthotists,
DPMs and other clinicians that provide direct
patient care.
Scope of Practice
A Pedorthic Shoe Technician (PST) is competent
in the design, fabrication, assembly, and
adjustment or servicing of Pedorthic footwear
for the prevention or amelioration of painful
and/or disabling conditions of the foot and
ankle. “Pedorthic footwear” means therapeutic
shoes and shoe modifications made for
therapeutic purposes. Download the CPED vs PST
Matrix here.
The PST will also have knowledge of adjunctive
therapies including AFO’s and foot orthoses that
may be utilized in conjunction with the
therapeutic footwear. The PST will also have an
appreciation of their relationship with the
medical community including the Certified
Pedorthist, Orthotist, Prosthetist and medical
professionals involved with the management of
the associated foot and ankle pathology.
To be recognized by the Shoe Service Institute
of America (SSIA), a PST must meet initial
educational requirements and pass a
comprehensive written exam given by a Pedorthic
Shoe Technician educational program approved by
the Shoe Service Institute of America.
