A Florida cobbler repairs worn soles and broken heels

The Sharp End: Cobblers to the gentry
In a day's shift at a Chelsea shoe-repair shop, Dave Waller discovers his sole. The story is that shoe repair is a goldmine in a recession.

Broken in, but not worn out
Richard Purpora began working at the shop when he was only 14 years old, under the tutelage of his uncle, Frank. Richard agreed to take over the family business in 2007.

I have a few pairs of Christian Louboutins that I would like to put rubber half soles on. I've seen people selling red rubber half soles on eBay in the past, but have had no such luck recently. I've asked almost every shoe repair shop in San Jose, CA if they have red half soles and every single one of them has told me that they do not exist. One person told me that they would have to be dyed or painted and that eventually, the color would fade and/or leave marks. I've had a black rubber half sole put on one pair and they take away the individuality of Louboutins, even though you do not see it very much. Is there any place I can order red half soles from?

I would say the original soles are made of leather and then painted red. So with that in mind, take your shoes to a paint store for a color match, buy the red paint. Tell the paint store expert what you are doing with the paint and have them recommend the proper type of paint for this purpose. Have your soles replaced with leather soles by a well respected repair shop and ask them to use the paint on the soles after they finish. Expect to pay extra for this work as it goes beyond normal repair costs. We have had this same request in our stores. It has worked out to our customers satisfaction every time.

for those of you who havn't seen their collection

you didn't mention which style you have
I didn't see red soles on all of them, just the evening styles, mostly high heel, but a few in the flats, also.

I have some red thin soling material, but it isn't as nice as what I see on the website.

I think Randy's suggestion is a VERYGOOD one...since I haven't seen these come to my shop.

I suspect you don't wear these every day, so if a shop does a quality job of dying/painting the soles, then you might be satisfied...

I have found out one true statement after being in this business for 40 years, some shoe companies make their shoes so unique, that makes it difficult to have them repaired back to the original look, so you have to go and buy a new pair...If you can live with a shoe repair shop that can do a good job in copying the original look, that might be what you have to do...(unless the shoe company will sell you the soles...)
I hope this helps...

I have quite a few pairs: some pigalles, 2 pairs of decollete, some ballet flats, a pair of lastic booties, and some wedged espadrilles. I know I can have them repainted and all that, but I would like to have red rubber half soles put on them. I wear the heels more often than the ballet flats and the sandals. I would prefer a rubber half sole for non-slip purposes as well as preventative purposes. I've heard of a place in New York that re-does the entire sole of Louboutins, but I would just like to be able to find a red rubber half sole for now. Thanks

I can get a red thin rubber protective sole to go over the original sole for non slip and durability. Are the original soles worn out or are you wanting to prevent them from wearing out? The red sole protector is made by Vibram.

They are not worn out yet, all but one pair are in pristine condition, with minimal scuffing on the red sole. I would like to prevent them from wearing out and to keep from slipping. What I've been doing is putting a thin layer of liquid bandage on the soles before I wear them... The dirt and debris sticks to it instead of scratching my pretty red soles and the rubberiness (pretty sure that's not a word :-) makes for a nice non-slip surface. However, this peels right off and it smells unpleasant, so I would like to just have a thin red rubber sole put on to them.

So what you need to do is talk to your repair shop that you prefer, ask them to check with their supplier of vibram products to see when they can get the vibram sole protector sheets in Red. It is coming out sometime in March or April depending on delivery. If they can't help you, you can send it via mail or ups to one of the forum members here who has it.

A few pairs?!! Damn girl, must be nice.

I had the same problem and ended up ordering clear soles from Footpetals

http://www.footpetals.com/cgi-bin/footpetals/832135000385.html

You will have to be creative and cut them so they fit the ENTIRE sole of the shoes. I actually used a razor blade to remove the remaining sticker. The soles have stayed red for a year. You will have to replace in some of the areas but that is not a problem.

While I'm told the vibram red sole protector is a bit off in color, I have having another company match the red color so we will have a long wearing thin rubber overlay that will work for you. the clear non slip from footpetals are not big enough to cover the whole area. What I did for my customer she was more than pleased with. She will NEVER have this problem on her shoes.

I saw some Louboutins for sale on eBay that the seller had red vibram rubber soles put on at Andy's in NYC. They looked okay. What other company matches the color? Also, on one of my shoes, the red chipped off on the part of the sole that doesn't actually touch the ground. The chip is a little smaller than a dime. Is there a particular kind of paint that I should use to cover it up? and is there a special kind of coating that I should put on it as well? Thanks

you can get a touch up paint at a paint store. As far as the vibram material, I received a sample today and it is off in color. Some shops will spray paint the rubber with a matching color to make it the correct red but I will wait until Soletech Rubber company makes the correct color.

The Soletech RED sole protector is now available and it is the right color RED. Ask your repair shop to get it for your shoes. I've already started getting the CL shoes in. The finished jobs looks great.

I just had the new Soletech red sole protectors put on two pairs of my C.L. heels and they turned out just great!!! The color matches perfectly! The material itself is just thin enough to look good without taking away from the beauty of the shoes, while being thick enough to actually provide real protection to those very expensive leather soles! A bonus is that they also provide great slip protection! As we all know, leather soles are very slippery! Now I can wear them without worry! I sent mine to Randy Lipson and I have to say, I loved his work so much I'm going to send him every pair I own! These are well worth the investment, in fact I think they should be a must get for anyone whose willing to pay top dollar for the wearable works of art called Christian Louboutins!
